5 Recommended Resources on Christology
There is no Christianity without the Lord Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity who took on human flesh. The Old Testament prophesies His coming and foreshadows Him in types. The New Testament records His life, death, resurrection, and ascension to heaven, providing teaching on His person and His work. The following resources, curated by the Ligonier editorial team, can help Christians as they seek to understand the person and work of Christ and thus “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
Ichthus: Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Saviour by Sinclair B. Ferguson and Derek W.H. Thomas
The early Christians drew a fish (ichthus in Greek) to identify themselves as believers, making the confession that “Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior.” But who is Jesus, and what is the meaning of His life? This book answers these questions by exploring nine key events in Jesus’ life and ministry, helping Christians to better know their Lord, and helping unbelievers to better understand what Christians believe about Jesus.
Rejoicing in Christ by Michael Reeves
Jesus didn’t just bring us good news. He is the good news. If we are to know who God is and live as He has called us to, we must look to Jesus Christ as He is revealed in God’s Word. In this book, Michael Reeves helps us celebrate who Christ is, His work on earth, His death and resurrection, His anticipated return, and how Christians share in His life, in order that we may grow in love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Glory of Christ by John Owen
This classic book from seventeenth-century theologian John Owen centers on the greatest privilege a Christian can enjoy: seeing the glory of Christ. Published a year after Owen’s death, the work began as his own private meditation and study, only later being shared with his congregation. These meditations and discourses on the person, offices, and grace of Christ can help Christians as they seek to behold Christ by faith in this life, until the day that we behold Him by sight in the life to come.
The Person and Work of Christ by B.B. Warfield
Benjamin B. Warfield’s seminal volume on the person and work of Christ is divided into two parts. Part 1 discusses the person of Christ and includes chapters on the historical Christ, the person of Christ according to the New Testament, the emotional life of our Lord, and the two natures of Christ. Part 2 examines the work of Christ as Redeemer and includes chapters on redemption, the atonement, and Christ our sacrifice.
