Abortion and the Character of God

What does God think about abortion? Today, R.C. Sproul helps us answer this question and looks at the Christian response to a common claim made in conversations about the topic of abortion.
I’m supposed to be a theologian by profession, and I’ve had the privilege of being able to study the things of God as my life’s vocation. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sure that there are errors in my theology. If I knew where they were, I would try to get rid of them. I want to be accurate. I want to be faithful. I want to know God, not just abstractly or academically; I want to know God personally.
Now, I want to say something bold. I think I do know Him—not perfectly, but I know something about God. And hear this: if I know anything about the character of almighty God, whose person and work I have been studying for so many years, I know that God hates abortion on demand. And there are evangelical preachers and evangelical teachers saying, “It’s alright because a woman has a right to her own body.” No, she doesn’t.
I say to anyone out there who says that a woman has a right to do with her own body what she wants to do: you tell me where she got it. Because what terrifies me about that is that somebody is now, by saying, “I have the right to do this,” is actually claiming a divine endorsement for their activity. And when we start calling good “evil” and evil “good,” and trying to say that God Himself endorses an activity that He abominates, we’re in trouble. And I can’t believe that we as Christians aren’t screaming literally, “Bloody murder,” every day, because when we allow this to happen, then we have surrendered all sanctity of human life.
