The Surpassing Delight of the Glory to Come
If we are reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, the highest joys and deepest pleasures of this life cannot begin to compare with the glory that awaits us. Today, R.C. Sproul challenges our common assumptions about what lies beyond the grave.
How often have you wondered about whether there was life after death? Sometimes we shrink in terror and in doubt when we contemplate something as wonderful as heaven purports to be. We sometimes are assaulted by the idea that’s just too good to be true. A couple of years ago, my wife and I were involved in a train accident in Alabama, where more people were killed in that train wreck than in all the rest of the accidents of Amtrak in their history combined. When we survived that we had newspaper reporters poking microphones in our faces and asking questions like, “Why were you so lucky as to survive this? Why would God allow you to survive, and while He took these other people's lives?” I've often thought about that. One of the things that pops into my mind is the assumption behind that question, that I was the lucky one. Because had I not survived the train wreck, I’d be home. I would be in heaven. Now, what’s the big deal? But we naturally assume that we’ll cling to life in this world desperately fearful that what lies beyond is worse. But for those who are going to heaven, the bliss that God has stored up for you is unworthy to be compared with any joy or any delight we cling to in this life.
