The Indestructible Church
As the church faces opposition and endures trials, Christians must not lose heart, for we know the gates of hell cannot prevail. Today, R.C. Sproul calls us to take courage in our triumphant Redeemer who is building His church throughout the world.
You hear the cliche that God doesn’t have any grandchildren because nobody’s born a Christian. And if one Christian dies and leaves this world, we’re one more person on the way to extinction unless God converts somebody else and multiplies His church. And we also have another cliche in church history that the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. The more the people of God are persecuted, the more they are slain, the more God raises up new people to be there in their place.
Somebody once said that our cemeteries are filled with indispensable people. There are no indispensable people. If I die, if you die, the church goes on. The gates of hell did not prevail because they can’t prevail. Because death cannot hold Christ, nor can it hold His church, nor can it destroy His church. My concern is not that we have a strong Reformed church next year. But my concern is, will there be a Reformed church fifty years from now? Now, what kind of a Reformed question is that? The answer to that is, of course there will be. This church or that church might die, but the church that Christ is building will never be destroyed.
