The purpose of our lives is the glory of God. What could be more atrocious than turning our devotion away from Him toward something He has made? Today, R.C. Sproul addresses the first of the Ten Commandments and the sin of idolatry.

Let me ask you today how important it is to you practically in your daily life that you not put anything before God? How important is it to you to live your entire life coram Deo, before the face of God, in the presence of God, under the authority of God, to the glory of God?

The end for which we have been created is God, that He might be all in all. We remember Augustine’s prayer: “Oh, Lord, Thou hast created us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee.”

We weren’t created simply for our labor, for our work, for our health, for our happiness, for our marriages, for our human relationships. All of those are part of the riches of life as we know it. But the ultimate end for which we were created was to glorify God, and that’s why the very first commandment calls us to a halt right there and says, “Wait a minute, number one, no other gods before Me.” God is jealous in the sense of zealous for His name and that we have been created for His glory. That is our mission. That’s our destiny. That is the purpose for which we breathe.
