The Holy Spirit seals every true believer in Christ with the unfailing promise of complete redemption. Today, R.C. Sproul examines the source and certainty of our perseverance in faith.
We know people, and we say those people are earnest people. They’re sincere. They mean well. But even earnest human beings have made promises of things that they were going to do in the future. And for whatever reason, they fail to perform on their promises. That they’ve given the earnest money and then backed out at closing, and they fail to fulfill the terms of the future bargain.
But don’t ever project upon God that kind of irresponsibility. When the Holy Spirit, who is the Holy Spirit of truth, makes a pledge for a future promise, it is absolutely guaranteed. That promise cannot be broken. And the promise that is given to every believer in which God seals His promise is the promise of future redemption.
Remember the word redemption. That’s when you cash in on it. You get the goods that are represented by the currency that comes in the form of certificates or whatever. And here he is saying that those who have trusted in the Word of Truth are sealed with the Holy Ghost. They have the guarantee of inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession. Because remember, our redemption has already been purchased. And the Holy Spirit guarantees that we will receive the full measure of that redemption in the final day.
And then the last phrase here is, “To the glory of God.” Our perseverance is never a testimony to our glory, but because it rests upon the divine gift and on the divine promise, it is always to the glory of God.
