After drawing his discussion of humility in Philippians 2 to a close, Paul returns in the opening verse of chapter 3 to the central theme of his letter to the Philippian church. This exhortation to rejoice in the Lord represents the pinnacle of this letter, as well as a core commitment of Paul’s own ministry. Just as the Apostle’s life has demonstrated, Christians can experience deep, abiding joy even in the most trying of circumstances. Nevertheless, it is up to each Christian to choose joy and pursue joy by pursuing Christ.
