After discussing how God has used a challenge from outside the church—his imprisonment by the Roman authorities—to spread the gospel, Paul now turns his attention to a challenge from within the church—those who criticize his ministry and seek to advance their own agendas under the guise of evangelism. In both cases, Paul’s response is the same: God is sovereign and can convert any challenge to the gospel into an opportunity to advance the gospel.
